Zhang Dali Paintings and Exhibitions at the Saatchi Gallery
Zhang Dali's intention throughout his body of work is to draw attention to the changes taking place in Chinese society, mainly due to the destruction of communities for many years. He wants to enter a dialogue with their compatriots who believes more and more distant than the drive for continuous modernization. His early works painted are visible everywhere in Beijing. His signature silhouette of a human head is found, among other things, the traditional courtyard houses marked for demolition. The graffiti artist calls his work "Dialogue" and documented by photography.According the artist, immigrant workers who came from rural areas all over China to earn a living in construction sites in Chinese cities are the largest members of the Chinese race, shaping our physical reality. However, they are the faceless crowd that live deep in our society. To cast in resin is a way of recognizing their existence and contribution and to capture a moment in the rapidly changing Chinese society. From 2003 to 2005, Zhang has 100 employees represented in the sculptures Immigrants resin the size of different positions, with a certain number, the artist's signature and title of the play "Children of China" tattooed on each of their bodies. They are often hung upside down, indicating the uncertainty of their life and their powerlessness to change their own destiny.
Zhang Dali then make pictures of faces migrant workers and resin casts of the heads or entire bodies. Having a studio in suburban Beijing, Zhang Dali met a migrant worker community who live nearby. Migrant workers have become a product of urbanization and the growth of major Chinese cities. Mobility came with the reform and not always a easy choice. Cities have become places of wealth and opportunities, which attracts all types of people in search of a better life. However, with this growth cities and the introduction of both the West: architecture, food, fashion, customs, etc also came a lot of uncertainty. The uncertainty of migrant workers is one of the key elements of its existence. Zhang Dali wanted to put these people and their lives hard and bitter to the attention of others, and has been the creation of the head and body volunteers placed in these people and painting their portraits in his presentation series. The AK-47 body casts are essential to conveying the message of the artist. Are represented upside down with ropes tied around their ankles. The images are shocking: hung like carcasses of meat in the air, the limbo. The artist uses the Chinese "Dao Xuan" to express being upside down in limbo, without the inner strength to put your body. These works reflect the spirit, or absence, of these workers. For Zhang Dali, sculptures taxonomy are alive, a version of human specimens of insects ("Ben Biao), with the exception of the specimens are live people. This is a documentation species in a specific time period in history.
