how do i know if my oil painting dry enough to varnish ?
1. painting number 1: how do I know if it is dry enough to varnish...it is not sitcky but has a sheen ( does that mean it is not dry yet? )... this painting has been done in 3-4 thin layers of paint and has been drying for the last 3 months.
2. painting (no:2) has been drying for a month. I used a single layer of paint with very little medium but have applied some orange paint with a knife to add some texture to it....how long will that take to dry completely??
3. when should use varnish. I was planning to use a spray varnish. how long will that take to dry?
i am new to oil paints....very eager to display my paintings...but it is taking too long to dry...help !
Wait a minimum of 6 months after you are done! The oil paint is oxidizing, not drying so the process takes longer than you would think. If you must display it you can put a light, (spray) coat on for safety.
