Mermaid Fantasy

Is Mayla a good name for a fantasy character?
I mean for a mermaid goddess.
I had the privilage of meeting Ray Columbus (singer/singwriter) recently and asked him a similar question concerning songs I had written. His answer was this: because it's your work, you are the one who knows what's right.
In other words, if you like it, then use it. If you dont like it, find another name. But here's the most important thing to remember: you're a writer. It's your job to create new things. So instead of wondering if Mayla is a good name for a fantasy character, you need to make it a good name for a fantasy character.
James Bond is one of the most famous names in literature. It also has a ring to it. But do you know why the writer chose that name? Because it was the most boring name he could think of.
Even if you used the most beautiful and exciting name, it wouldn't mean a thing because the reader is more interested in the character, not the name. It's the character that will make the name loved, not the other way around.
